Play It Now: No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

While it may be getting overshadowed by the likes of big-budget
blockbusters Mass Effect 2 and Sony’s MAG, both of which have just hit shelves, another game has arrived under the radar. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle*, the latest from beloved weirdo development outfit Grasshopper Manufacture and its weirdo ringleader, Suda51, is now shipping for Nintendo Wii.
Review scores have been excellent, and it’s no surprise — this
is old-school Japanese gaming at its most bizarre and most compelling, telling the tale of punk anti-hero Travis Touchdown, an ass-kicking otaku with a pro wrestling obsession. This
time around, Travis fights against a host of over-the-top enemies, on his way
to be become "the number one assassin in the world," with tongue planted firmly in cheek the whole way through.
While it’s tough to describe the sort of visual and cultural anarchy the
game creates, it’s a brand of “huh?... wait... awesome!!!” that gamers will recognize quickly upon picking up the controller. The visceral thrill of the sword-based
action (achieved by heavy swings of the Wii remote), and the wild storyline
make for one of 2010’s first true classics. Play it.
